Working Here
Mary Umoh, Head of Information Security

I joined the council in 2019 and my first impression was the positive and forward-thinking attitude of my colleagues. I joined with the knowledge of the ethnic diversity of the Borough’s citizens and this was immediately evident on my first day when I went up to the staff eating area on the 7th floor in Mulberry place. I could see so many well known and not so well known dishes going in and out of the numerous microwaves provided for staff use.
The IT leadership team was fabulous, welcoming, and settling, even on my first day. Team meetings are focused on achieving outcomes, sharing good practices, seeking support where necessary and providing a listening ear. I may have been a new kid on the block, having joined others that were six months ahead of me, but that made no difference. It was particularly encouraging that I was not made to feel like a super woman in my early days, but given sufficient support to learn my way through the different systems.
It is now two years since those early days, its still a roller coaster journey, particularly with Cyber Security as the threat landscape is a constant moving train, which has picked up enormous speed since the lockdown and remote working. There are a lot of exciting times ahead, particularly as most of the technology has now been modernised, we are almost a wholly cloud consumer and your expertise will be spent delivering real value and not just mundane stuff. You will have ample opportunities to develop new skills where you wish to and significantly improve on existing ones. We are a new team led by an open-minded director, passionate about innovation, improvements, and opportunities. Should you join us, you will find the only thing stopping your progress will be yourself.
Diran Egbinola, User Support and Training Officer

I am part of the Social Care IT Team and after 2 years working for Tower Hamlets as a locum in Adult Social Care I certainly picked the perfect time to become a Tower Hamlets employee! I joined SCIT in March 2020, two weeks before we went into the first lockdown and 2 months before the launch of Mosaic, the new social care records system.
I really enjoy working in IT. I’m in the middle of a computing degree and as well as continuing to use my social work knowledge to support Tower Hamlets social care staff, I’ve learned a great deal about a range of computing systems and devices, not least because as we all know there have been many changes over the last 18 months. The accelerated move to using Teams has presented many opportunities for meetings and networking that would have been harder to dip in to had they been face-to-face.
We’re living in challenging times, but I’m in a team where I’m encouraged to make contributions and take my ideas forward and explore. I hope the result is a better experience of Tower Hamlets for our service and those who need us.
