Public Health

We asked our team members what they thought about working in Public Health in Tower Hamlets.

Simon Twite, Public Health Programme Lead:

"I’ve worked in Public Health in Tower Hamlets in a number of roles for many years. While initially I was determined not to remain in one place for any great length of time, as I had in my first career, I’ve found the stimulation, challenges and rewards that working in Tower Hamlets has brought me, irresistible.

I’ve loved the opportunities that working in the field of public health brings to work collaboratively with inspiring people from across the council, from many parts of the health and care sector and from the communities we serve, to play a part in taking meaningful action to address the often long-standing health and wellbeing challenges faced by people living in Tower Hamlets.

Above all, it’s been continually rewarding to be part of a large and supportive public health team, one that puts a strong focus on my continuing professional development, encourages me to always aim higher and one in which there is always a lot of fun to be had too."

Elaine Londesborough-Van Rooyen, Public Health Programme Manager:

“I’ve worked for Tower Hamlets Council in the Healthy Children and Families Team for nearly 2 years. The Borough is vibrant and diverse and there are unparalleled opportunities to get involved in a wide range of interesting Public Health work. In my time here I’ve worked on lots of exciting projects including actions to support our child healthy weight strategy, recovery work on childhood immunisations and preparations for the procurement of an infant feeding support service.

The Healthy Children and Families team is friendly and fun to work in – despite starting my role in the middle of a pandemic I was made to feel very welcome. The leadership team are responsive and engaged, setting a clear strategic vision - everyone is united in our desire to make a difference to families in the borough.

Before coming to the council I worked in the charity sector in a variety of policy, campaigning and service delivery roles. My past experience has been valued and I’ve been able develop as a public health professional. I’ve had some wonderful learning opportunities here and have been supported in progressing my career, including being encouraged to apply for the public health speciality training programme which I will be starting in the Summer. I hope to be back in Tower Hamlets one day as it’s been such a great place to work!”
